UNDP Response to Cyclone Idai in Mozambique

When Cyclone Idai made landfall in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in April 2019, its devastating force killed over 900 people, destroyed homes and shattered livelihoods. UNDP intervened quickly to assess the damage and working alongside the humanitarian community including the United Nations system, the Government of Mozambique and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable recovery. UNDP Regional Director for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa visited the region and meeting with emergencies response teams and local authorities including Mozambique President, H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi. UNDP intervened quickly to assess the damage and working alongside the humanitarian community including the United Nations system, the Government of Mozambique and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable recovery.  UNDP Regional Director for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa visited the region and meeting with emergencies response teams and local authorities including Mozambique President, H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi.  UNDP led the Early Recovery Cluster in Beira, close to the epicenter of the cyclone, deploying disaster, recovery and waste management experts on the ground. UNDP also conducted a social economic study of the impact of the cyclone and participated in the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) to inform reconstruction needs.
