UN Secretary-general’s Special Envoy on el Niño and climate visits MozambiqueOct 25, 2016
United Nations Special Envoy on El Niño & Climate Ambassador Macharia Kamau arrives in Mozambique today for a four-day visit to assess the situation of communities affected by El Niño-linked drought, as part of global advocacy and mobilisation efforts in response to the humanitarian emergency currently affecting dozens of countries around the world.
Ambassador Kamau (also Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York) and former Irish President Mary Robinson were appointed by the UN Secretary-General in May as his Special Envoys on El Niño and Climate. As part of their role, the Special Envoys are visiting several countries negatively impacted by the 2015/2016 El Niño. With an estimated 1.5 million people affected across seven provinces due to the nation’s worst drought in 35 years, Mozambique was identified as a priority country for Ambassador Kamau to visit, following a short visit to Botswana.
Ambassador Kamau’s Mozambique visit will include audiences with senior officials of the Mozambican government. He will also consult with donors that are supporting the drought recovery effort, as well as UN agencies and NGOs implementing emergency response interventions. On Thursday he will visit Magude District to meet with communities and witness the effects of the El Niño-linked drought on the most disadvantaged of Mozambican families, as well as on the private sector as represented by the Xinavane Sugar Company.
On Friday 28 October Ambassador Kamau will attend a press conference – all press are invited to attend.
