The success story of biodiversity conservation in Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park (GNP) is a renown world heritage wildlife and biodiversity area in central Mozambique. After years of destruction ravaged by civil war, the GNP is a remarkable story of restoration that involves the surrounding communities as part of the solution to support conservation efforts. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been a part of this success story through the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Projects, aiming to support the conservation of globally threatened species, improved biodiversity enforcement and expanded protected areas through community conservancies.

Support through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Project 

Gorongosa National Park is a preserved area in the Great Rift Valley in the heart of Mozambique. Covering over 3,000 km, its forests and savannahs are home to lions, hippos elephants and numerous other species. Its forests, surrounding wetlands and rivers and the variety of wild life, makes Gorongoza one of the most prestigious conservation and biodiversity parks in Africa and the world.

The life store of success and challenges of this world renown park is interwoven with the history of Mozambique itself.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been a part of this success story through the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Projects aiming to:

  • Support the conservation of globally threatened species in Mozambique
  • Improved biodiversity enforcement
  • Expanded protected areas through community conservancies

UNDP is proud to support the Gorongoza National Park. This support is contributing to environment conservation, a key objective of the Sustainable Development Goals
